An Overview of VCE EAL – Year 11 Unit 1 & 2

VCE EAL – Year 11 Unit 1 & 2 is designed for students whose first language is not English. The course aims to strengthen communication skills while developing students’ ability to engage with a range of texts, construct well-supported arguments, and respond effectively to spoken and written English. 

Key Areas of Study in VCE EAL – Year 11 Unit 1 & 2 

• Reading and responding to texts – Students read literary and non-literary texts, focusing on comprehension, interpretation, and analysis. They learn how to identify key themes, character development, and the use of literary techniques. 
• Writing structured responses – Students develop writing skills by crafting essays, persuasive pieces, and comparative analyses. They learn how to organise ideas clearly and use appropriate vocabulary and sentence structures. 
• Listening comprehension – The course includes tasks where students listen to spoken English and answer questions based on their understanding. These tasks assess their ability to interpret tone, meaning, and key details. 
• Oral communication and presentations – Speaking skills are developed through discussions, presentations, and group activities. Students practise articulation, pronunciation, and fluency, gaining confidence in verbal expression.

VCE EAL Units 1 & 2 FAQs

Is there an exam in Units 1 & 2?

No external exam – Units 1 & 2 are assessed at school (satisfactory or not satisfactory, plus school SACs). Your ATAR study score is earned in Units 3 & 4.

If Year 11 does not count, why get tutoring?

Because it builds the foundations Units 3 & 4 assume. Mastering EAL in Year 11 means starting Year 12 ahead instead of relearning the basics.
