HZ Tutoring 2026

The #1 VCE Maths Methods Tutors in Melbourne

HZ Tutoring provides one-on-one VCE Maths Methods tutoring in Melbourne and online across Victoria, from $94/hour with every resource included. Lessons run weekly with the same tutor – a University of Melbourne high-achiever who scored highly in Methods under the current study design – and your first 30-minute lesson is free.

Methods is assessed by School-assessed Coursework (40%) and two end-of-year exams – the tech-free Exam 1 (20%) and the tech-active Exam 2 (40%). Most students lose Methods marks in the same place: the tech-free Exam 1, where a CAS calculator cannot save you and the assessors want exact-value working. That is exactly what we train.

Key takeaways

  • Assessment: Unit 3 SAC 20% + Unit 4 SAC 20% + Exam 1 (tech-free) 20% + Exam 2 (tech-active) 40%.
  • Exam 1 is one hour with no calculator or notes – it rewards exact-value working, and it is where Methods is won or lost.
  • Methods scales up: in 2025 a study score of 40 scaled to about 46.
  • $94/hour, weekly, same tutor, first 30 minutes free.

How we think about teaching Methods

Three things separate a good Methods tutor from a good mathematician – and we hire for all three.

They can slow down. Methods students sit at very different skill levels, and strong tutors who never struggled with the content often cannot explain it to someone who does. Ours teach the concept from where you are, not where they are.

They have taken maths further. University subjects like Calculus 2, Linear Algebra and Real Analysis give a tutor a deeper, more connected understanding – so they explain why, not just the steps.

They scored highly in Methods and Specialist. For a subject this technical, a high study score is non-negotiable – it is proof they have mastered the exact skills the exam tests.

What we cover: Units 3 and 4

The current study design has four areas of study, and our lessons map to each: Functions and graphs (polynomial, exponential, logarithmic and circular functions and their transformations), Algebra, number and structure, Calculus (differentiation and integration and their applications – the heart of the course), and Data analysis, probability and statistics (discrete and continuous distributions, and statistical inference). We drill each in your school’s SAC style, then shift to full exam conditions from mid-year. See how a Methods score scales in VCE scaling explained, or estimate your ATAR with our free ATAR calculator.

The mistakes that cost the most marks

The number-one Methods leak: leaning on the CAS. Exam 2 rewards smart CAS use, but Exam 1 is tech-free – students who have outsourced their algebra to the calculator all year get exposed. We build the by-hand fluency Exam 1 demands.
  • Average value vs average rate of change – two different calculations students routinely confuse.
  • Strictly increasing or decreasing intervals – including whether the endpoints are included.
  • Decimals where exact values are required – a constant Exam 1 mark-loss.
  • Discrete vs continuous probability – mixing up the tools for each.

Exam 1 vs Exam 2

Exam 1 (tech-free)

Fluency and exact values under time pressure. We drill by-hand differentiation, integration and algebra until they are automatic, and mark past Exam 1 papers against the VCAA report.

Exam 2 (tech-active)

Smart CAS technique and interpretation. We teach the calculator shortcuts that save time, when not to trust the CAS, and how to structure extended responses for full marks.

Pricing: simple and weekly

$94/hour, one-on-one, all HZ resources included, 24/7 support between lessons, no lock-in contracts. Why weekly? Methods compounds – miss the logic of differentiation in Term 1 and integration falls apart in Term 3. Weekly lessons with one tutor keep that loop closed, which is why we do not offer fortnightly schedules. See full pricing.

Results and reviews

Across 2023 and 2024, HZ students improved their average SAC marks by 8-25% after starting tutoring.* HZ Tutoring is rated 4.9 out of 5 on Google.
