HZ Tutoring provides one-on-one VCE Biology tutoring in Melbourne and online across Victoria, from $94/hour with every HZ resource included. Lessons run weekly with the same tutor – a University of Melbourne science student who knows the current study design inside out – and your first 30-minute lesson is free.
Biology is assessed by School-assessed Coursework across Units 3 and 4 (worth 20% and 30% of your study score) plus one end-of-year exam worth 50% – and it rewards precise scientific language and applying concepts to unfamiliar experiments, not rote memorisation. Here is how we prepare you for both.
Key takeaways
- Biology rewards precise scientific language and applying concepts to unfamiliar experiments – not memorisation.
- Assessment: Unit 3 coursework 20% + Unit 4 coursework 30% + end-of-year exam 50%.
- The exam runs 2 hours 30 minutes: Section A is 40 multiple-choice (40 marks), Section B is 80 marks – 120 total.
- Biology scales close to even (2025 scaled mean 30.5), so your result comes from mastery, not scaling.

Meet our VCE Biology tutors
Haobo Zhang – 98 ATAR, University of Melbourne Biomedicine
Biology is Haobo’s own subject – he sat it, scored highly, and now studies Biomedicine at the University of Melbourne. Lessons focus on the two things the exam actually rewards: using precise biological language and applying concepts to unfamiliar experiments and data. WWCC approved.

How we teach VCE Biology
Units 1 and 2: build the foundations Units 3 and 4 assume
Year 11 Biology sets up Year 12 – cells, biochemistry and the basics of genetics all resurface in Units 3 and 4. Students joining in Year 11 start with a diagnostic: what is solid, what is shaky, and a plan for the year’s SACs.
Units 3 and 4: the current study design, not last decade’s
Under the 2022-2026 study design, Unit 3 covers nucleic acids and proteins (DNA, RNA, gene expression, and the biotechnologies – PCR, gel electrophoresis, recombinant plasmids and CRISPR-Cas9) and how biochemical pathways are regulated (photosynthesis and cellular respiration, enzymes and rate). Unit 4 covers responding to antigens (innate versus adaptive immunity, pathogens, vaccines and immunotherapy), how species change over time (natural selection, speciation and the evidence for evolution), and the student-designed scientific investigation. Every worked example maps to a current outcome. (Source: VCAA Biology Study Design 2022-2026.)
SACs: half your study score
School-assessed Coursework across Units 3 and 4 contributes 50% of your study score and ranks you within your school – including the Unit 4 student-designed investigation, presented as a scientific poster with a logbook. We rebuild the topic, drill the question styles your school uses, and run a timed practice before the real thing. Bring past SACs and feedback; we read them line by line for the marks you are leaving behind – imprecise terminology, half-answered validity questions, command-word slips.
The exam: trained for all year
The end-of-year VCAA exam carries the other 50% and rewards technique as much as knowledge. From mid-year, lessons shift toward full exam conditions – timed sections, marking-guide language, and a personal error log so revision targets your mistakes, not generic ones.
| Assessment | Study score | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Unit 3 School-assessed Coursework | 20% | Nucleic acids/proteins and biochemical pathways |
| Unit 4 School-assessed Coursework | 30% | Immunity, evolution, and the scientific poster |
| End-of-year exam | 50% | 2h30m + 15 min reading; 120 marks – Section A 40 multiple-choice (40 marks), Section B 80 marks |

Results and reviews
Across 2023 and 2024, HZ students improved their average SAC marks by 8-25% after starting tutoring.* HZ Tutoring is rated 4.9 out of 5 on Google.
*Based on average SAC marks before and after commencing tutoring, 2023-2024.
Pricing: simple and weekly
One-on-one VCE Biology tutoring is $94/hour, including all HZ resources (valued $199), 24/7 text and email support, regular parent check-ins and our replacement-tutor guarantee. No lock-in contracts; simple weekly payments. See full pricing.
Why weekly? Biology builds on itself – a process you half-learn in Unit 3 comes back in the Unit 4 SAC and again in November. Weekly lessons with one tutor who knows exactly where you are keep that loop closed. It is the system that makes the results possible, and it is why we do not offer fortnightly schedules.

Is VCE Biology hard?
Biology is content-heavy but conceptually accessible, and it is not one of the hardest-scaling subjects (2025 scaled mean 30.5, about the state average). The difficulty is in precise language and applying concepts to unfamiliar experiments, not in the maths.
How is the VCE Biology exam structured?
It runs 2 hours 30 minutes plus 15 minutes reading time and is out of 120 marks: Section A is 40 multiple-choice questions (40 marks) and Section B is short-answer and extended-response questions (80 marks). The exam is worth 50% of your study score.
How are VCE Biology SACs weighted?
Under the 2022-2026 study design, Unit 3 coursework is 20% of your study score, Unit 4 coursework is 30%, and the end-of-year exam is 50%.
Does VCE Biology scale up or down?
Biology scales close to even – its 2025 scaled mean was 30.5, so a study score of 40 rose slightly to about 41. It neither scales up strongly like Specialist Maths nor down like the lowest subjects.
How much does VCE Biology tutoring cost?
$94/hour for private one-on-one lessons, including all resources and 24/7 support between lessons. Your first 30-minute lesson is free.
When should I start?
Earlier beats later. The most common regret we hear is from students who waited until after a disappointing mid-year SAC. If you are choosing between now and after the next SAC, choose now and walk into that SAC prepared.
Ready to lift your Biology score?
