VCE ATAR Calculator

Use our free VCE ATAR Calculator to estimate your ATAR from your VCE study scores. Enter a score for each subject to get an indicative scaled aggregate and estimated ATAR in seconds, built by HZ Tutoring’s 98+ ATAR tutors who have sat these exams. Remember: the ATAR is a rank, not a mark out of 100, and VTAC sets the official scaling each year.

How the VCE ATAR is calculated

The ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) is a percentile rank from 0.00 to 99.95, in steps of 0.05, showing how you performed relative to your Year 12 age group. An ATAR of 75.00 means you finished above about 75% of students. It is built in three steps:

  1. Study scores (VCAA): each VCE subject gives a study score from 0 to 50, where 30 is the average, showing your rank within that subject.
  2. Scaling (VTAC): each study score becomes a scaled study score from 0.00 to 55.00, so subjects compare fairly, adjusting for how competitive each subject’s cohort is rather than how hard the curriculum is.
  3. Aggregate to ATAR: VTAC adds your best English-group scaled score (English, EAL, Literature or English Language), your next three best scaled scores, and 10% of your fifth and sixth scores, to form an aggregate (0 to about 210) that is ranked into your ATAR. ATARs below 30.00 are reported as “less than 30”.

What is scaling?

Scaling adjusts for the fact that some subjects attract a stronger cohort. If a subject’s students did well across their other subjects, that subject scales up; if not, it scales down. For example, in VTAC’s own figures a raw 36 in Specialist Maths scaled to about 48.75, while many subjects scale slightly down. The four Maths subjects (Specialist, Methods, General, Foundation) are scaled against each other, and languages receive a modest boost. Do not pick a subject just because it scales up; a strong score in a subject you are good at usually beats a weak score in a high-scaling one.

How to use this calculator

Enter a study score for each subject. The calculator applies indicative scaling based on the latest VTAC data and shows your estimated aggregate and ATAR. Try lifting one subject to see how it moves your ATAR; often a few extra marks in a lower-scoring subject changes things most.

How accurate is this ATAR calculator?

It is a close estimate using recent VTAC scaling data. Official scaling is recalculated by VTAC each year after exams, so use the result to set targets; it is not your final ATAR.

Want a higher ATAR?

The most reliable way to lift the score this calculator shows is consistent weekly 1-on-1 tutoring with a tutor who has scored a raw 40+ in your subject. HZ Tutoring’s first 30-minute lesson is free.

Frequently asked questions

How is the ATAR calculated?

Your best English-group scaled score, plus your next three best scaled scores, plus 10% of your fifth and sixth scores, form your aggregate, which is ranked into an ATAR from 0 to 99.95.

What is the difference between a study score and an ATAR?

A study score (0 to 50) rates you within one subject; the ATAR (0 to 99.95) ranks your overall performance against the whole Year 12 cohort.

What is scaling?

VTAC adjusts each study score for how competitive that subject’s cohort is, so different subjects can be compared fairly.

Is this ATAR calculator accurate?

It is an indicative estimate; VTAC sets the official scaling each year after exams.

Currently, some universities have their own, but it only shows their own courses and their algorithms are not the most accurate.
