How the VCE ATAR is calculated

The ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) is a percentile rank from 0.00 to 99.95, in steps of 0.05, showing how you performed relative to your Year 12 age group. An ATAR of 75.00 means you finished above about 75% of students. It is built in three steps:

1. Study scores (VCAA): each VCE subject gives a study score from 0 to 50, where 30 is the average, showing your rank within that subject.
2. Scaling (VTAC): each study score becomes a scaled study score from 0.00 to 55.00, so subjects compare fairly, adjusting for how competitive each subject’s cohort is rather than how hard the curriculum is.
3. Aggregate to ATAR: VTAC adds your best English-group scaled score (English, EAL, Literature or English Language), your next three best scaled scores, and 10% of your fifth and sixth scores, to form an aggregate (0 to about 210) that is ranked into your ATAR. ATARs below 30.00 are reported as “less than 30”.

What is scaling?

Scaling adjusts for the fact that some subjects attract a stronger cohort. If a subject’s students did well across their other subjects, that subject scales up; if not, it scales down. For example, in VTAC’s own figures a raw 36 in Specialist Maths scaled to about 48.75, while many subjects scale slightly down. The four Maths subjects (Specialist, Methods, General, Foundation) are scaled against each other, and languages receive a modest boost. Do not pick a subject just because it scales up; a strong score in a subject you are good at usually beats a weak score in a high-scaling one.

How accurate is this ATAR calculator?

It is a close estimate using recent VTAC scaling data. Official scaling is recalculated by VTAC each year after exams, so use the result to set targets; it is not your final ATAR.

What is the difference between a study score and an ATAR?
