HZ Tutoring 2026

The #1 VCE Specialist Maths Tutors in Melbourne

HZ Tutoring provides one-on-one VCE Specialist Maths tutoring in Melbourne and online, from $94/hour, weekly, with your first 30-minute lesson free. Specialist is the highest-scaling commonly-taken VCE subject – in 2025 a study score of 40 scaled to about 51 – so even a mid-range Specialist score can lift your ATAR more than a top score elsewhere. It is also the most demanding maths, built on proof, complex numbers, vectors, mechanics and differential equations, with Maths Methods as a co-requisite.

Key takeaways

  • Specialist is the highest-scaling common subject: a 2025 study score of 40 scaled to about 51.
  • Assessment: Unit 3 SAC 20% + Unit 4 SAC 20% + Exam 1 (tech-free) 20% + Exam 2 (tech-active) 40%.

What we cover: Units 3 and 4

Our lessons map to the current design: complex numbers (arithmetic, polar form and regions of the complex plane), proof and reasoning (induction and contradiction), vectors, kinematics and dynamics (mechanics), advanced calculus (integration techniques and differential equations), and statistical inference (distributions of sample means, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing). Because Methods is a co-requisite, we join the dots between the two courses so each makes the other easier.

Does Specialist scale? Yes – the most

Specialist is the highest-scaling commonly-taken VCE subject: in the 2025 VTAC report a study score of 40 scaled to about 51, and a 30 scaled to roughly 43. That scaling reflects the strength of the cohort, not a bonus for difficulty – the students who take Specialist tend to score highly across all their subjects. See VCE scaling explained, or estimate your ATAR with our free ATAR calculator.

The mistakes that cost the most marks

The Specialist trap: skipping steps in a proof. Exam 1 is tech-free and proof-heavy, and marks are awarded for rigorous, justified reasoning – a correct final line with gaps in between still loses marks. We drill full, exact working.

Other recurring errors we target: setting up vector and mechanics problems incorrectly; choosing the wrong integration or differential-equation technique; sign and exact-value slips in the tech-free exam; and misinterpreting statistical inference results. Fixing these is the fastest path from a 35 to a 40+.

#1 Tutoring Company for Customer Satisfaction

HZ Tutoring

Pricing: simple and weekly

$94/hour, one-on-one, all HZ resources included, no lock-in contracts. Why weekly? Specialist is relentlessly cumulative – a technique you do not lock in this week blocks the next topic. Weekly lessons with one tutor keep that loop closed, which is why we do not offer fortnightly schedules. See full pricing.
