HZ Median VCE General Maths Study Score of 45

HZ Tutoring 2026

The #1 VCE General Maths Tutors in Melbourne

VCE General Maths (Formerly, VCE Further Maths) is often the only maths subject that a lot of students take as it’s the easiest (aside from Foundation Maths) in the VCAA curriculum. However, this subject is often taken by a lot of Methods and Specialist Maths students which makes it highly competitive and difficult to score well.

When you’re near the very top, it can be almost as bad as ‘one mark lost = one study score lost’ which is caused by a lot of high-achieving maths students all competing for the top. For a lot of these students, they’re able to very quickly understand the topic and solve almost all questions.

How to Find a Good General Maths Tutor?

It’s pretty simple to see whether or not someone is a good VCE General Maths tutor. It all comes down to how engaging they can make they’re teaching and how well they can simplify a topic

  1. They need to be able to explain the concepts to a 5-year-old. For General Maths especially, it’s incredibly important that a tutor is able to simplify topics and make them digestible. The topics in General Maths are not difficult, however, too many tutors struggle to explain it clearly to a student, causing a lot of unneeded confusion.
  2. They need to understand that this is not Methods or Specialist Maths. It’s not about layout, application and detailed working, it’s all about understanding concepts and utilising the CAS. The CAS calculator is central to General Maths, so if your tutor is not showing you CAS commands every lesson, it’s probably something you should notice.

Key takeaways

  • Assessment: School-assessed Coursework 40% + two exams 60% (Exam 1 = 40 multiple-choice; Exam 2 = short + extended).
  • General Maths is often the only maths a student takes, and highly competitive at the top – one dropped mark can cost a study score.
  • It scales down (a 2025 study score of 40 sat around 38), so your result comes from mastery and marks, not scaling.
  • $94/hour, weekly, same tutor (Eesa, Raw 50 in General Maths), first 30 minutes free.

What we cover: Units 3 and 4

Our lessons map to the four areas of study: data analysis, recursion and financial modelling, matrices, and networks and decision mathematics. The CAS calculator is central, but the marks are won in interpreting and communicating results in context – which is exactly what we drill.

The trap in General Maths: treating it as button-pushing. Top students set up the CAS fast, then explain what the numbers mean – the exam rewards interpretation, not just the answer.

Pricing: simple and weekly

$94/hour, one-on-one, all HZ resources included, no lock-in contracts. Why weekly? In a competitive cohort every mark counts, and steady weekly practice is what protects your ranking – so we do not offer fortnightly schedules. See full pricing.

VCE General Maths tutoring FAQs

Is VCE General Maths easy?

It is the most accessible VCE maths, but that makes it competitive – the cohort is strong at the top, so small errors cost study-score points. Technique and accuracy matter.

How is the General Maths exam structured?

Two exams: Exam 1 is 40 multiple-choice questions; Exam 2 is short-answer and extended-response. Together they are 60% of your study score; School-assessed Coursework is the other 40%.

Does General Maths scale?

It scales down – a 2025 study score of 40 sat around 38 – so it rewards mastery and accuracy rather than scaling. It is still a strong ATAR contributor when scored highly.

How much does tutoring cost?

$94/hour for private one-on-one lessons, all resources included, with your first 30-minute lesson free.
