When it comes to making a bound reference, a lot of students don’t seem to understand that it’s quality over quantity. It’s not about somehow writing the entire textbook’s worth of content into an exercise book, that’s just a waste of your time and is going to be no help during the exam.

What Should I Actually Include in my Summary Book?
It is significantly more important to only include, clear, easy-to-understand diagrams and definitions that you may forget during the exam. This will allow you to really be able to visualise and apply the information during the exam, which consists mostly of application and unseen questions.
Take a look at the 2025 VCE Math Methods Study Design.
Another big thing is to not put past exam questions inside. A lot of students seem to think that it’s almost like a ‘cheat strategy’ to put in past year exam questions, because ‘you can just copy the answer, right?’ Wrong. Totally wrong.
It will only work if the question on the past exam is exactly the same as the actual exam and it never is.
If you make a mistake on a practice question, learn from the mistake and make sure you understand how to do the question. Once you’ve done that, there’s no need for you to add it to your bound reference.
How Long Should My Math Methods Summary Book Be?
In the end, your bound reference should be no longer than 10 pages long, with only important information that you feel you may forget in the exam, organised clearly so that YOU know where it is.
If that sounds difficult, we’ve made a 7-page 2025 Math Methods bound reference with only the most important content from the entire study design. It’s got clear diagrams and easy-to-understand concepts that will cover everything you need during the exam. Get it here while it’s still on sale.
When Should I Make My Summary Book?
You might be tempted to create your summary book with your workbook that you use throughout the year. However, this will include a very large amount of filler and be difficult to use during exam time.
It’s much more useful to only make a few pages of your summary book every time a few days before a SAC or the exams. This way, you only have the most important content and it’s still fresh in your mind, without making the whole thing a maze to look through.
