How we think about teaching English

We teach how examiners actually mark. English is not maths – there is no “correct answer” to copy. Our tutors know what assessors reward: a genuine contention, precise metalanguage, evidence woven in rather than quote-stuffed, and a piece that flows to a real resolution.

We make it click. English is one of VCEโ€™s most-disliked subjects, usually because it is taught at the wrong pace. The right tutor makes even an unmotivated student want to improve.

We do not write your essays for you. Memorising a tutorโ€™s essay is a trap. We give you everything you need to craft your own – because that is what the exam rewards and what actually lifts your score.

Preparing for a specific task? Our tutor guides: the oral presentation, argument analysis, text response and creating texts.

How VCE English is assessed

Under the current 2024-2027 study design, Units 3 and 4 cover three areas: Reading and responding to texts (analytical text response), Creating texts, and Analysing argument. Your study score comes from School-assessed Coursework across these plus the end-of-year exam.

Section AAnalytical response to a studied text20
Section BCreating a text (from a Framework of Ideas)20
Section CAnalysis of argument and persuasive language (unseen)20

The exam is 3 hours plus 15 minutes reading; the three sections are equally weighted (60 marks). Source: VCAA English Study Design 2024-2027.

Where English marks are won and lost

The trap in argument analysis: every student in the state analyses the same exam article, so near-identical, device-spotting responses flood the exam. Marks come from analysing how the argument positions the reader – not from listing persuasive techniques.

The other recurring places students lose marks: a vague or missing contention; over-quoting instead of embedding brief evidence; weak metalanguage; and running out of time across three essays. Every one is fixable with weekly marked practice.

English tutoring

Pricing: simple and weekly

$94/hour, one-on-one, all HZ resources included, 24/7 support between lessons, no lock-in contracts. Why weekly? English improves through a feedback loop – write, get it marked like an examiner would, apply the fix, repeat. Weekly lessons keep that loop tight, which is why we do not offer fortnightly schedules. VCE English tutoring FAQs

Is VCE English hard?

It is not conceptually hard like maths, but it is the subject most reliant on feedback and the hardest to self-mark – which is why a tutor who marks like an examiner makes such a difference.

How is the VCE English exam structured?

Three hours plus 15 minutes reading, three equally-weighted sections of 20 marks each: an analytical text response, creating a text, and an analysis of argument.

Does English scale, and why is it compulsory?

English (or EAL, Literature or English Language) is compulsory for the ATAR. Mainstream English scales close to even – a 2025 study score of 40 sat around 39 – so because everyone needs it, a strong English score lifts your aggregate directly.

How do I improve my essays quickly?

Targeted weekly feedback on your own writing – a clear contention, embedded evidence and precise metalanguage marked against the criteria – beats memorising sample essays.

How much does English tutoring cost?

$94/hour for private one-on-one lessons, all resources included, with your first 30-minute lesson free.
