HZ Tutoring provides one-on-one VCE Chemistry tutoring in Melbourne and online across Victoria, from $94/hour with every HZ resource included. Lessons run weekly with the same tutor – a University of Melbourne science student who knows the current study design inside out – and your first 30-minute lesson is free.
SACs and the end-of-year exam each contribute 50% of your VCE Chemistry study score, so neither can be an afterthought. Here is how we prepare you for both.

How we teach VCE Chemistry
Units 1 and 2: build the foundations Units 3 and 4 assume
Year 11 chemistry decides how hard Year 12 feels. We make bonding, stoichiometry and reaction fundamentals automatic, because the Units 3 and 4 study design assumes them on every page. Students joining in Year 11 start with a diagnostic: what is solid, what is shaky, and a plan for the year’s SACs.
Units 3 and 4: the current study design, not last decade’s
The current design (2024-2027) centres on how chemical processes are designed and optimised – fuels and energy, rates and equilibrium – and how carbon-based compounds are designed for purpose: organic pathways plus the analysis toolkit of spectroscopy and chromatography. Every worked example, practice SAC and exam drill maps to a current outcome, not a superseded one.
SACs: half your study score
Your school’s five SACs across Units 3 and 4 – including the student-designed investigation and scientific poster – contribute 50% of your study score and rank you within your school. We prepare deliberately: your tutor rebuilds the topic, drills the question styles your school uses, and runs a timed practice before the real thing. Bring past SACs and feedback; we read them line by line to find the marks you are leaving behind (units, significant figures, justification phrasing – the classic chemistry leaks).
The exam: trained for all year
The end-of-year VCAA exam carries the other 50%, and it rewards technique as much as knowledge: data-response stems, multi-step calculations with carried errors, and command-word precision. From mid-year, lessons shift toward full exam conditions – timed sections, marking-guide language, and a personal error log so revision targets your mistakes, not generic ones.
| Assessment | Study score | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Units 3 & 4 coursework (5 SACs) | 50% | Includes the student-designed investigation (scientific poster) |
| End-of-year exam | 50% | 2h30m + 15 min reading; 120 marks – Section A 30 multiple-choice (30), Section B 90; Data Book supplied |
Results and reviews

Pricing: simple and weekly
One-on-one VCE Chemistry tutoring is $94/hour, including all HZ resources (valued $199), 24/7 text and email support, regular parent check-ins and our replacement-tutor guarantee. Semi-private classes (2-4 students, $49/hour) open periodically – currently waitlisted. No lock-in contracts; simple weekly payments. See full pricing.
Why weekly? Chemistry compounds. A concept missed in week 3 resurfaces in the week 8 SAC and again in November. Weekly lessons with one tutor who knows exactly where you are keep that loop closed – it is the system that makes the results possible, and it is why we do not offer fortnightly schedules.

How much does VCE Chemistry tutoring cost in Melbourne?
$94/hour for private one-on-one lessons with HZ Tutoring, including all resources and 24/7 support between lessons. Semi-private classes are $49/hour when available. Your first 30-minute lesson is free.
Are lessons online or in person?
Both. Most students choose online – same tutor, same whiteboard workflow, no travel – but in-person can be arranged across Melbourne depending on tutor availability.
Who will my tutor be?
A high-achieving University of Melbourne science student who excelled in VCE Chemistry under the current study design, interviewed and trained by HZ. You can request a specific tutor, and we will replace your tutor free at any time if the fit is not right.
Can you help with both SACs and the final exam?
Yes – they are equally important, at 50% of the study score each. We structure the year around both: foundations and SAC preparation through Terms 1-3, then a deliberate shift to full exam technique from mid-year, guided by a personal error log.
My SAC marks are already strong. Is tutoring still worth it?
Strong SAC students often gain the most: rankings are protected, and lesson time goes to exam technique and the multi-step questions that separate a 35 from a 40+. We will be honest in the free trial if we do not think you need us.
When should I start?
Earlier beats later. The most common regret we hear is from students who waited until after a disappointing mid-year SAC. If you are choosing between now and after the next SAC, choose now and walk into that SAC prepared.
