Year 11 Tutoring Melbourne: Build the Base Year 12 Is Graded On
Year 11 is VCE Units 1 & 2 – the year that decides how hard Year 12 feels. The content, the SAC technique and the study habits that Units 3 & 4 are graded on are all built now, a year before any of it counts toward the ATAR. HZ provides weekly 1-on-1 Year 11 tutoring with top-scoring VCE tutors – $94/hour, everything included – online, Melbourne-wide, with a free trial lesson first. The honest bit up front: if your Year 11 student is on top of Units 1 & 2, they may not need us yet – here’s the checklist.
Year 11 tutoring at a glance
- Weekly 1-on-1, $94/hour all-in (resources + 24/7 AI study support included) · small-group $49/hour where a class exists.
- Every VCE subject, Units 1 & 2 – English, Methods, Specialist, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Legal and more, taught by tutors who scored in them.
- SAC skills before they count: timed practice, marking-scheme technique and note systems built in the low-stakes year.
- Accelerating a Unit 3 & 4 subject? That score is real – we tutor it as the Year 12 subject it is.
Why Year 11 is the year that decides Year 12
Units 1 & 2 don’t score into the ATAR – and that’s exactly why they get neglected, and exactly why that’s a mistake. The content carries straight over. Units 3 & 4 assume you already own the Unit 1 & 2 material; a student who half-learned it spends Year 12 relearning foundations while being graded on the extension. SAC technique is a skill, not a fact. Reading a marking scheme, managing timed conditions, structuring a response under pressure – these take a year to build, and Year 11 is the year to build them where a shaky SAC costs nothing permanent. The study system compounds. A student who learns to take real notes, space their practice and self-test honestly in Year 11 walks into Units 3 & 4 with the machinery already running. The expensive alternative is the one we see every year: the Term 3 Year 12 panic hire, when the calendar is full and every week already counts.

- Sciences: Biology Units 1 & 2 · Chemistry
- Humanities: Economics · Legal Studies – ask us about any other subject.
Taking a Unit 3 & 4 subject in Year 11?
Acceleration is common and officially supported: VCAA’s handbook is explicit that “there are no prerequisites for entry into Units 1, 2 and 3.” Many Melbourne students take one Unit 3 & 4 sequence in Year 11 – and unlike Units 1 & 2, that study score is real and counts toward the ATAR. The catch nobody mentions: an accelerated subject is competing against students a year older, sitting the same exam. If that’s your child, we tutor it as the Year 12 subject it is – and our guide to getting a high ATAR covers how a single strong 3 & 4 score early changes the whole picture.
How it works
One weekly hour, same tutor every week – a recent top-scoring VCE graduate who sat the current study designs and holds a current Working with Children clearance (our vetting answers are published here). Lessons run online across Melbourne – Werribee to Box Hill, same tutors. $94/hour includes all resources and 24/7 AI study support between lessons; small-group classes are $49/hour where a class is running. Wondering whether one hour a week is enough? Here’s the honest answer. Start with a free trial lesson – a real lesson, no payment details, and we’ll tell you honestly if we don’t think tutoring is needed yet.

Frequently asked questions
Do Year 11 results count toward the ATAR? Not directly – Units 1 & 2 are marked satisfactory or not by your school, and the ATAR comes from Units 3 & 4. But Year 11 builds the content and technique Year 12 is graded on, so it decides how hard Year 12 feels. (An accelerated 3 & 4 subject taken in Year 11 does count.)
Is it worth getting a tutor in Year 11? When there’s a real gap or a real goal, yes – it’s the lower-stakes year to master SACs and content before it counts. If your child is on top of Units 1 & 2 comfortably, be honest: they may not need it – run the checklist.
How much does Year 11 tutoring cost in Melbourne? Market rates run roughly $60-120/hour. HZ is $94/hour for weekly 1-on-1 with everything included, or $49/hour in a small group – no enrolment fees or lock-ins.
Should we start in Year 11 or wait for Year 12? Starting in Year 11 is both cheaper and calmer – you’re building foundations in a low-stakes year instead of repairing them mid-SAC-season in Year 12. It’s also the difference between a Year 12 who’s ahead and one who’s catching up. (Starting even earlier pays off too – see Year 10 tutoring.)
