How to Study VCE Psychology
VCE Psychology looks like a memorisation subject and marks like a science. The students who score 40+ do three things – they write definitions in the study design’s own language, they treat research methods and key science skills as their highest-value topic, and they answer to the scenario instead of around it. How VCE Psychology is assessed
Under the current study design (2023-2027), Unit 3 asks how experience affects behaviour and mental processes; Unit 4 covers the science of mental wellbeing, sleep and learning. Your study score is built from three graded assessments:

Learn the dot points in the study design’s language
Psychology’s marking is glossary-strict. “Specific” and “sensitive”, “stress” and “stressor”, “learning” and “memory” models – the assessors mark against the study design’s wording, and a near-miss paraphrase on a 2-mark definition is a donated mark. Build a term deck straight from the dot points, one area of study at a time, and test yourself two ways: write the definition, then apply it in one sentence to a scenario you invent. If you can do both, the mark is yours in any question format.
Research methods: the marks everyone else donates
Key science skills are not a topic you visit once – they run through every area of study, every SAC and the whole exam. Independent, dependent and controlled variables; validity versus reliability; sampling; how to read a results table and say what it shows, not what you hoped it would show. Two practical rules: first, drill research methods with the same seriousness as content, because these questions repeat in structure year after year. Second, be careful with older study guides – the research-methods framework and the exam weighting both changed with the 2023 study design, and plenty of well-ranked advice online still teaches the old version. Answer to the scenario, not around it
Most Section B marks hang on command terms and application. Identify means name it. Describe means give its features. Explain means show the link – the because. Analyse and evaluate mean break it down and make a judgement. The drill that fixes technique in a fortnight: take one concept – say, a model of stress – and answer it four times under four different command terms, each time forcing one sentence that names the scenario’s person or study. The final 10-mark extended response is marked on exactly this: psychological terminology, analysis, and evidence drawn from the stimulus.
SACs are half your score now – protect the rank weekly
Since the exam dropped to 50%, your SAC performance – specifically your rank, which the exam then moderates – carries half the subject. In a cohort as large as Psychology’s, steady weekly work on the term deck and research-methods drills is the cheapest rank protection available – the students you are ranked against are all capable of cramming the same content the night before.
The exam: 120 marks in 150 minutes
That is 1.25 minutes per mark – budget by marks, not questions. Bank Section A fast (40 multiple choice; flag and move rather than second-guessing), then give Section B its full time, planning the 10-marker before writing it. Practise with past exams the right way: papers from 2023 onwards match the current design; older papers are content drill, not format practice. Slightly down, and it should not scare you. In the VTAC 2025 scaling report Psychology’s scaled mean was 28.4 – a raw 30 became about 28 and a raw 40 about 39. Like a skill, not a chapter: a short drill most weeks. Take any study from your notes or a past paper and interrogate it – IV, DV, controlled variables, sampling method, one validity threat, one improvement. Ten minutes, twice a week, beats a panicked weekend in October – and make sure your practice questions come from 2023-onwards papers, because the framework changed with the current study design.
