How to Study VCE Physics

By the HZ Tutoring team, edited by Haobo Zhang (98 ATAR, University of Melbourne Biomedicine). Updated 29 September 2026. Every VCAA fact on this page is checked against the current study design (2024-2027), the official 2025 exam paper and examiner report, and the 2025 VTAC scaling report.

VCE Physics is the rare subject that scales up – and the exam that punishes one habit above all others: practising single-step formula questions when the paper pays for multi-step reasoning. This guide covers how the study score is actually built in 2026, what the 120-mark exam looks like, how to build an A3 notes sheet that earns marks instead of wasting panels, and the five mistakes VCAA’s own examiner reports say cost students the most.

Key takeaways

  • Your study score = Unit 3 SACs (30%) + Unit 4 SACs (20%) + one end-of-year exam (50%), under the 2024-2027 study design.
  • The 2026 exam is on Thursday 12 November, 9:00-11:45 am – 20 multiple-choice marks + 100 short-answer marks = 120 total, in 2.5 hours.
  • A formula sheet is provided in the exam. Copying formulas onto your A3 sheet wastes the most valuable real estate you’re allowed to bring.
  • Physics scaled to a mean of about 32 in 2025: a raw 30 became ~32 and a raw 40 became ~42. It scales up because of the cohort, not because the exam is gentle.
  • In 2025, 85% of students scored zero on the exam’s big multi-step electricity question. Multi-step practice is the highest-paying study habit in this subject.

How VCE Physics is actually scored

Under the current study design (Units 3&4 accredited 2024-2027), your study score comes from three blocks: Unit 3 School-assessed Coursework at 30% (three outcomes worth 10% each), Unit 4 coursework at 20% (two outcomes worth 10% each – one of them the student-designed practical investigation), and the end-of-year written examination at 50%. Half the subject is decided in one 2.5-hour sitting – which is why everything below is pointed at the exam.

One planning note: because the design took effect in 2024, past exams from 2024 onwards match what you’ll sit. Older papers are still useful for mechanics practice, but treat pre-2024 papers as topic drills, not trial runs – our guide to using past exams properly has the full year-by-year relevance table.

The 2026 exam at a glance

  • When: Thursday 12 November 2026, 9:00-11:45 am (15 minutes reading + 2 hours 30 writing). Cross-check every subject on the 2026 exam timetable.
  • Structure: Section A – 20 multiple-choice questions (20 marks). Section B – 19 short-answer questions (100 marks). 120 marks in 150 minutes: budget roughly 1.25 minutes per mark and bank the difference for the long questions.
  • You bring: a scientific calculator and pre-written notes – “one folded A3 sheet or two A4 sheets bound together by tape”, typed or handwritten, from any source.
  • You’re given: the official formula sheet. It stays true year to year: every core formula is already in the room with you.

The A3 sheet: build it to retrieve, not to copy

Physics is the only VCE subject that lets you bring a loose pre-written notes sheet – and every year, the examiners’ report explains how students waste it. The 2022 report says it directly: “Students are advised not to copy definitions from their A3 reference sheet when they do not know how to answer a question… it will not score any marks as it will not address the specifics of the question.” The 2024 report repeats the warning about answers that read as “an amalgam” of sheet material “without consideration of the specifics of the question”.

The same reports show what does work. On the 2024 banked-track question, examiners noted that many students succeeded because “they had an example like this on their A3 sheet”. Worked examples earn; copied definitions don’t. Build your sheet accordingly:

  • Leave off: anything already on the provided formula sheet, and dictionary definitions. That’s dead space.
  • Put on: one fully worked example per hard question type (projectile with launch angle, banked track, transformer chain, photoelectric graph analysis), sign conventions and hand-rules with your own diagrams, derived combinations you use often, and your personal error list.
  • Structure it: a folded A3 gives you four A4-sized panels – one per major area works well (motion & forces / fields / electricity & magnetism / light, matter & data analysis).
  • Test it: if you haven’t retrieved something from the sheet during a timed practice paper, it hasn’t earned its spot.

Does Physics scale up? Yes – here’s what that means

In the 2025 VTAC scaling report, Physics scaled to a mean of about 32: a raw study score of 30 became approximately 32, and a raw 40 became approximately 42. Physics is one of the few VCE subjects that scales up, because it attracts a strong cohort – the same reason the marks are hard-won in the first place. Treat scaling as a tailwind, not a plan: it rewards students who were already competitive. How scaling works across every subject is covered in our VCE scaling guide.

The five mistakes that cost the most marks

These aren’t generic study tips – each one is drawn from the official VCAA examination reports for 2022, 2024 and 2025, with the numbers to prove it.

  1. Practising single-step questions for a multi-step exam. On the 2025 paper’s transmission-line question, 85% of students scored zero – they couldn’t chain voltage drop → line current → power. The report’s advice: students handle “single-step, substitution questions” but need “more complex, application type problems”. Make one multi-step problem set per week non-negotiable, and write a two-line strategy before touching the calculator – the 2024 report recommends exactly that.
  2. Losing graph marks that have nothing to do with physics. Lines of best fit ruled through the first and last points only (“it is not clear where this instruction is coming from” – the 2024 report, which then wrote a question specifically to punish it), gradients taken from data points that aren’t on the line, and dropped powers of ten. These are free marks for careful students.
  3. Confusing diffraction with interference. Flagged in the 2022, 2024 and 2025 reports – three exams running. Young’s double-slit is an interference result; diffraction is a different phenomenon. Know which word answers which question.
  4. Orbit questions: radius vs altitude. In 2025, a third of students used altitude without adding Earth’s radius; in 2022 the error ran the other way. Every satellite question: draw the radius, label both distances, then substitute.
  5. Ignoring the practical-investigation language. On the 2025 paper, fewer than 10% of students could correctly name the independent, dependent and controlled variables, and only a third knew repeated measurements reduce the effect of random errors – wording that sits verbatim in the study design. This is an entire outcome, and it’s the cheapest set of marks on the paper.

The weekly system that actually moves marks

  • One multi-step problem block per week (45-60 min, timed, no notes) – drawn from 2024-onwards papers as the year progresses.
  • An error log that feeds the A3 sheet. Every lost mark becomes either a worked example or a one-line trap reminder on the sheet. By October the sheet is a map of your own weaknesses, which is exactly what you want in the room.
  • Weekly consistency over holiday cramming. Physics concepts stack – fields build on motion, electromagnetism builds on fields. A steady weekly rhythm with your teacher, study group or tutor beats any late blitz.
  • From September: one full timed paper per fortnight, marked against the official examination reports – reading the report is worth as much as sitting the paper.

Frequently asked questions

Is VCE Physics hard?

It’s demanding in a specific way: the exam rewards multi-step reasoning and data-analysis skills more than memorisation – the formula sheet is provided, so recall isn’t the bottleneck. Students who practise application problems weekly find it very learnable, and it scales up.

What can you bring into the VCE Physics exam?

A scientific calculator and pre-written notes: “one folded A3 sheet or two A4 sheets bound together by tape”, typed or handwritten, from any source. The official formula sheet is provided with the paper, so don’t spend your sheet duplicating it.

Does VCE Physics scale up or down?

Up. In the 2025 VTAC scaling report a raw 30 scaled to about 32 and a raw 40 to about 42, with the subject mean around 32 – one of the stronger upward adjustments in the VCE.

How is the 2026 Physics exam structured?

One 2.5-hour paper (plus 15 minutes reading): Section A is 20 multiple-choice questions worth 20 marks; Section B is 19 short-answer questions worth 100 marks – 120 marks total, worth 50% of your study score.

When is the 2026 VCE Physics exam?

Thursday 12 November 2026, 9:00-11:45 am – in the final week of the written exam period.
