No-ATAR Pathways to University in Victoria

The ATAR is one door into university – not the only one. In fact, about half of all domestic students starting a bachelor’s degree in Australia are not recent school leavers, so the ATAR was never part of their admission – and even among recent school leavers, roughly three in ten are admitted without their ATAR being considered (Mitchell Institute, Assessing the ATAR, December 2025). If your ATAR is not where you hoped, or you are doing an unscored VCE or the Vocational Major, there are well-established Victorian pathways to a degree. Here they are. Key takeaways

  • A large share of university entrants get in without an ATAR – it is one route, not the only one.
  • TAFE or a diploma can lead into a degree with credit, sometimes on a guaranteed pathway.
  • Foundation and enabling programs, mature-age entry, and the STAT test are all real routes in.
  • Portfolio, audition and early-entry schemes admit students on more than a number.
  • These pathways suit VCE VM students, unscored students, and anyone whose ATAR fell short.

The ATAR isn’t the only way in

It is worth seeing the numbers plainly. In 2024, 64% of Victorian and Australian Year 12 students received an ATAR – which already means a large minority did not. And of the students starting a bachelor’s degree, about half were not recent school leavers, so their ATAR was irrelevant to getting in; among those who were recent school leavers, around three in ten were admitted without the ATAR being considered at all (Mitchell Institute, Assessing the ATAR, 2025). None of this means the ATAR does not matter – if university is your goal, aim for the best one you can. It just means a lower ATAR, or none, is not the end of the road. The pathways that actually work

  • TAFE / diploma to degree. Complete a diploma or associate degree, then transfer into a bachelor’s degree – often with credit for what you have done, and sometimes via a guaranteed pathway. One of the most reliable routes for students without a competitive ATAR.
  • Foundation and enabling programs. University-run bridging courses designed to prepare you for a degree and lead straight into one.
  • Mature-age entry. If you are 21 or over, universities can admit you on the basis of work and life experience rather than an ATAR.
  • The STAT (Special Tertiary Admissions Test). A supplementary aptitude test, offered through VTAC, that some courses accept in place of or alongside an ATAR.
  • Portfolio, audition or interview entry. Common for creative arts, design and some education courses – where what you can do matters more than a rank.
  • Guaranteed and early-entry schemes. Many Victorian universities run early-offer or experience-based programs that consider your whole application, not just your ATAR (VTAC lists these under its Early Offer Programs).

Exact eligibility and any minimum requirements change year to year and differ by institution, so always check the specific course page and confirm current details with the university and VTAC. (Sources: VTAC – pathways & Early Offer Programs; individual institution pathway pages.)

Who these pathways are for

They matter most for three groups: VCE Vocational Major (VM) students, who do not receive an ATAR and use these routes by design; students doing an unscored VCE; and anyone whose ATAR came in below the cut-off for the course they want. If you are in the last group, remember that a pathway often gets you to exactly the same degree – just via a slightly different first step.

The honest note. Pathways are a genuine second route in – not a reason to ease off now. If university is your goal, the simplest path is still the best ATAR you can earn, because it keeps the most doors open from day one. Treat these pathways as insurance and as options, not as a plan to coast.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get into university without an ATAR?

Yes. Many students enter university without an ATAR through TAFE-to-degree pathways, foundation programs, mature-age entry, the STAT test, and portfolio or early-entry schemes. About half of students starting a bachelor’s degree are not recent school leavers.

What’s the best non-ATAR pathway to a degree?

For most students it is a TAFE diploma or associate degree that articulates into a bachelor’s degree with credit – often on a guaranteed pathway. The best option depends on the specific course and university, so check their pathway page.

Can VCE Vocational Major (VM) students go to university?

Yes. VCE VM students do not receive an ATAR, but they can reach university through TAFE-to-degree pathways, foundation and enabling programs, and other non-ATAR entry schemes.

My ATAR was below the cut-off – what now?

You still have options: a related diploma with a pathway into the degree, a foundation program, an early-entry or portfolio scheme, or applying again as a mature-age student later. A lower ATAR often just changes your first step, not your destination.
